Mifflin County opens season with split in first meet at new facility
LEWISTOWN — The Mifflin County track and field team christened its new facility Tuesday night with a strong opening performance, splitting a double-dual meet against Chambersburg and Central Dauphin East.
Both the boys and girls teams fell to Chambersburg but rebounded with convincing wins over CD East, giving the Huskies an encouraging start to the spring season.
On the girls side, Mifflin County dropped a 106-44 decision to Chambersburg before bouncing back for a 99-37 win over CD East. The boys team followed a similar path, falling 106-43 to Chambersburg and defeating CD East, 95-42.
“We’re very proud of how the season started,” Mifflin County coach Tamara Sechler said. “The hard work over the indoor season allowed many athletes to start out with good marks.”
Among the top performers was Taylor Kenepp, who picked up a pair of victories in the sprints, winning both the 400-meter dash and the 200-meter dash to lead the Huskies on the track.
In the field events, Dekker Pietzsch delivered one of the most notable performances of the night. The newcomer wasted no time making an impact, setting a new school record in the shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 4.5 inches.
Sechler noted the early success wasn’t limited to returning athletes, as several newcomers made their presence felt in their first meet.
“Our team is fortunate to have many new athletes this season,” she said. “Dekker started the season remarkably well.”
The meet marked the first official competition at Mifflin County’s new track and field facility, adding another layer of significance to the evening.
